WHS's Melissa Cockerham Named WISD's May "Texan of the Month"

May 22, 2024

Wimberley High School Administrative Assistant Melissa Cockerham is the May recipient of the district's "Texan of the Month" honor - Wimberley ISD's (WISD) employee recognition program.

Texan of the Month honorees are nominated by WISD co-workers for positively exemplifying the district's vision of: Excellence, Innovation, Service.

melissa cockerhamMrs. Cockerham has been with WISD for seven years and worked in the health insurance industry prior to that. Her common job duties include assisting with major events on and off campus such as the Academic Awards Ceremony and graduation, planning and carrying out teacher and staff appreciation days, submitting purchase orders and deposits, and assisting the campus leadership team. While Mrs. Cockerham handles those duties with efficient productivity, it is her repeated knack of stepping into other roles as needed that led to her being named "Texan of the Month". WHS lead custodian Sherry Beam was one of multiple nominators to submit Mrs. Cockerham for the award. Mrs. Beam said:

"Melissa has such a servant heart! She is by far the most caring and unselfish person I have ever met. She puts her job first, but I have seen her help out in the kitchen day after day when they were so short-staffed, even while knowing she had a desk full of work of her own. She cares for all of us at WHS. On multiple occasions she brings home-cooked food to help show our staff that they are appreciated, or just to help someone in need. The list goes on and on for all that she does for the HS staff."

Mrs. Cockerham says her co-workers make it easy for her to pitch in and help in all areas, "The people I work with make this job feel easy even in the craziest of times. No two days are ever the same and whatever the day throws at me, I always know I have a great group of people to help me get through it. I feel honored to receive this award and I don't think it would be possible without the help and support of everyone around me." She adds that ultimately the students at WHS make all the hard work rewarding, "The students who always have smiles on their faces and say 'Hello, how are you doing?', when walking through the halls - that's what makes what we do here worth it."

Along with the honor of being named Texan of the Month, each award recipient receives a $250 cash gift from a community sponsor, as well as a certificate to receive a free massage from the Wimberley Med Spa and a gift certificate for a free service from Salon Divino. May's cash sponsor was Byron Eckols State Farm Insurance. Recipients also receive a custom "Texan of the Month" coin, generously provided by Darren Masur with Centex Recognition.
