Free Meal Program to be Discontinued by USDA; Apply Now for Free/Reduced Meals in 2022-23
May 5, 2022
Last August, the Wimberley ISD Child Nutrition Department announced that all student breakfast and lunch meals would be available at no cost for the 2021-22 school year. The free meal opportunity was a result of guidance issued by the United States Department of Agriculture.
It was expected that the free meal opportunity would only last one year, and that is the case; beginning with the 2022-23 school year the breakfast/lunch meal program will return to its pre-pandemic status and all meals will come with a cost. With this change, the free/reduced meal program is also being re-started. WISD families whose students qualify for free/reduced price meals will be able to submit an application to receive lower-cost meals. In order to take advantage of this program, families of students that qualify for free/reduced price meals must do the following:
Apply during the summer, using the 2022-23 Application Form (coming soon), to receive free/reduced price meals for the remainder of the 2022-23 school year.
To be clear, meals will continue to be free for all students through the end of this school year.
Also, if you believe your family qualifies to receive free/reduced price meals please see the attached flyer that has information about the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT). This program may provide food benefits for families in need. (Please disregard the April 29th deadline on the flyer.) To see if your family is eligible for this program, you will need to fill out the same 2021-22 Application Form linked above and here.
Please contact WISD's Child Nutrition Department at 512-847-2414 if you have questions about either of these programs.
