Lady Texan Volleyball Season Ends in State Championship Match

The Wimberley High School Lady Texan volleyball team lost to Decatur HS in straight sets in the 4A State Championship match on Nov. 21 at Garland's Culwell Center, 25-13, 25-12, 25-19. Wimberley advanced to the state final for the first time since 2010 by defeating Bellville High School in the semifinals on Nov. 17 by a score of 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18.
The loss in the final broke Wimberley's 17-match winning streak, leaving the team's final record at 30-5. Junior Paige Crawford was named to the 4A State Championship All-Tournament team following the final match.
The 2020 Lady Texans were led by Wake Forest-commit Crawford, senior Brina Jones, senior Holly Harwood, senior setters Jordan McFarland and Ana Detmer, and senior libero Rhyan Masur. Senior Ava Kientz and juniors Cameren Davis and Layla Dubuisson also contribute heavily along the front line. Crawford led the team in kills with 459, while Jones had 306 and Harwood contributed 235. Crawford, Detmer, and Harwood led the team with 47 aces apiece. Jones led the team with 91 blocks, while Davis had 48 and Crawford had 39. Masur had 741 digs while McFarland and Detmer paced the team in assists with 727 and 576 respectively. The Lady Texans were led by head coach Stephanie Barthels and assistants Katie Gillman, Roberto Frontera, and Cady Bargfrede.
From 1998 to 2010 the Lady Texans advanced to the state tournament nine times in 13 years, winning six state championships - all under Texas Girls' Coaches Association Hall of Fame coach Lee Grisham.
