WISD to Be Closed on April 8, 2024 During Total Solar Eclipse
October 16, 2023
Wimberley ISD will close all campuses and district offices on April 8, 2024, the date our area will experience a total solar eclipse.
The official change to the Academic Calendar was made by the Board of Trustees on October 16, and comes after WISD received guidance from the Hays County Office of Emergency Management (HCOEM). HCOEM estimates 500,000 people will visit the Hill Country area to experience the solar eclipse, and they encouraged WISD and other area school districts in the “path of totality” to not hold school on this day for a variety of safety-related reasons. Among those concerns are the potential for significant traffic congestion that could cause afternoon bus routes to last several hours and the anticipation of prolonged internet/cell phone service disruptions in the hill country, which could impact communications with emergency responders and/or a student’s family.
The addition of April 8th as a non-school day will NOT require an additional make-up day. WISD has abundant instructional time built into the current academic calendar. The official Academic Calendar has been updated and is available online here.
