WHS Team Tennis Season Ends in Regional Finals
October 21, 2022
The Wimberley HS Team Tennis season ended one round shy of the state tournament, losing the regional final match to Boerne HS 10-3 at the Annemarie Tennis Center in San Antonio.
The Texans finished second in District 28-4A, behind Boerne HS, the eventual 4A State Runner-Up. In the bi-district and area rounds of the playoffs, the Texans swept through Pleasanton (10-1) and Needville HS (10-0) respectively. That set up a district rematch against #9 state-ranked Fredericksburg HS in the regional quarterfinals. The Texans were 11-8 winners against the Billies in district play and were victorious in the postseason as well, winning 10-7. That win secured a trip to the Region IV tournament in San Antonio and a matchup against Uvalde HS. In the match, Uvalde won four of the seven doubles matches to take a 4-3 lead into singles play. In the singles matches, the Wimberley girls led the way. The girls were 5-0 in their singles matches (and leading in the remaining girls' match) to provide an advantage over Uvalde. Wins by senior boys John Moore and Austin Hooper were enough to clinch the berth in the regional final match.
Against Boerne, the Texans fell behind 2-5 through the doubles matches. Wins by the duo of Ella Malone and Maggie Moore and by the twin tandem of Kate and Kennedy Carson were the two points secured by Wimberley. In singles, Gwen Pierce won her match, and John Moore, Lea Martin, and Maggie Moore were all up a set in their matches when Boerne clinched the win, with a final score of 10-3. The Texans finished the season with an overall match record of 12-7 and were ranked #7 in the state.
