Texan Football Team Wins District; Season Ends in Region IV Semifinals
November 26, 2021
The Wimberley High School Texan football team's season ended in the 4A-II Region IV semifinals after a 36-26 loss to Cuero HS at the Alamodome on November 26. The Texans ended the season with a 10-3 record. The Texans advanced to the third round by way of a 56-0 victory over Navasota HS in the bi-district round and a 66-0 shutout of Ingleside HS in the area round.
The Texans finished the regular season 8-2, including 4-0 in district to win the 14-4A-II title. Wimberley played a typically tough non-district schedule, including two 5A teams and finished 4-2 against the slate. All six non-district opponents qualified for the playoffs, including three that advanced to their respective regional finals. The key district win for the Texans was a 27-0 shutout over rival Navarro HS that clinched the district title on October 22.
The Texans have been led all season by a stingy defense and a well-balanced offensive attack. After losing several senior skill-position players from the 2020 semifinalist team the Texans have relied on spreading the ball around in 2021 on offense and consistent stops from the "Code Red" defense. The defense allowed an average of 10.7 points per game. Eight of the 13 opponents managed only one score or less against the Texans. During the regular season the Texans were led by senior safety Nathan Simpson, who racked up 72 tackles and 4 interceptions, both of which led the team. Senior linebacker John Boyle had 61 tackles, 3 sacks, and 4 tackles for loss. Senior Kerrick Lai had 47 tackles, 6 of which were for a loss, and had 2 sacks. Seniors Dylan Kincaid (44 tackles), Juan Olmedo-Barraco (42 tackles, 2 interceptions), and Ethan Lancaster (24 tackles) also provide strong defensive play. Other defensive standouts include junior Shay Shroyer (29 tackles, 4 sacks), seniors Kyle Mitchell, Chris Schatte, and Moses Wray and juniors Jack Riser, Lane Patek, and Johnny Ball.
Many of those same names also paced the offense for the Texans. Olmedo-Barraco was the leading scorer, with 15 total touchdowns (12 receiving, 3 rushing). His 779 receiving yards led the team. The leading rusher was senior Wray with 969 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. Wray added 118 yards as a receiver. During the bi-district game against Navasota, Wray surpassed 4,000 total yards during his career with the Texans. Distributing the ball was sophomore Cash McCollum who completed 69% of his passes for 2,336 yards and 28 touchdowns with only 7 interceptions. Senior Tyler Ross also played quarterback, throwing for 5 touchdowns and 386 yards. Ross added 442 yards and 9 touchdowns rushing and 67 yards and another touchdown receiving. Simpson was the team's second-leading receiver with 612 yards and four touchdowns. Adding to the rushing totals were Ball (370 yards, 5 TDs) and Schatte (278 yards, 1 TD). Other receiving contributors were juniors Tru Couch (320 yards, 3 TDs) and Ryan Shaw (295 yards, 5 TDs). Senior Kincaid had 157 receiving yards and 4 TDs. Senior kicker Jack Bruner was also a steady force, even kicking a 49 yard field goal against Navarro that is believed to be a Texan record.
