Marshall, Thames Earn Medals at State Track Meet; WHS Competes in Six Other Events
May 7, 2021
Wimberley High School students competed at the 4A State Track and Field Meet in eight events on May 6 at the University of Texas's Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Senior Christian Marshall (left) led the way for the Texans, winning a gold medal for his first-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles. Marshall also qualified in the 300 meter hurdles and finished 8th in that event. It was Marshall's second trip to the state meet, as he placed 7th in the 110 meter hurdles his sophomore year in 2019.
Sophomore Emily Thames (right) led the Lady Texans, winning a silver medal in the long jump with a personal-best jump of 18 feet-0.75 inches on her final attempt of the competition. With that effort Thames defeated both competitors that defeated her at the District, Area, and Regional meets.
Also scoring points at the meet was the boys' 4x200 meter relay team of Cameron Waida, Ty Pruett, Nathan Brooks and Juan Olmedo-Barraco. They finished 4th in a school record time of 1:28.29. Junior Grace Harney also scored points by finishing 5th in the girls' 300 meter hurdles. Harney broke her own school record at the meet with her time of 46.55. Also breaking a school record set by the same quartet, was the boys' 4x400 meter relay team of Canyun Staton, Nathan Brooks, Landon Gary, and Juan Olmedo-Barraco.
In the team standings, the WHS boys finished in a tie for 12th with 18 points, and the girls' team finished tied for 18th with 10 points.
