Texan Football Team Advances to 4A State Semifinals
December 4, 2020
The Wimberley High School Texan football team has advanced to the 4A state semifinals for the second consecutive year following its defeat of Navarro HS on Dec. 4. The Texans will play defending 4A-Division state champion Carthage HS in the semis. The matchup is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Randall Reed Stadium in New Caney.
The Texans advanced to the playoffs by finishing in second place behind Navarro in District 14-4A-II. The Texans lone district blemish was a 24-22 loss to the Panthers on Oct. 23. In the playoffs, the Texans dispatched Smithville HS in the bi-district round 27-6, Hondo HS in area 54-14, Sinton HS 35-14 in the regional round, and Navarro HS 35-14 in the state quarterfinals.
The 2020 Texans have been led by a stifling defense all season long. The defense - nicknamed "Code Red" - has given up an average of just over 15 points per game this season, while the offense has scored nearly 40 points per game. Offensively, quarterback Matthew Tippie leads the Texans charge with 3,548 yards passing, 35 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions. He's distributed his passes to leading receivers Ty Pruett (1,039 yards, 14 TDs), Jaxon Watts (860 yards, 8 TDs), Nathan Simpson (425 yards, 3 TDs), and Moses Wray (327 yards, 2 TDs). In addition to those four, 2019 all-state receiver Christian Marshall tallied 356 yards receiving and 3 TDs despite being injured in the fourth game of the season and not returning until the quarterfinals.
Wray leads the team in rushing with 996 yards and 11 TDs, giving him total yardage that amounts to 1,323 yards. He's scored a combined 13 TDs. Juan Olmedo contributed heavily on the ground over the first half of the season with 499 yards and 6 TDs, before he was also lost for the season due to injury.
The Texans offensive playmakers have stepped up their games in the playoffs. In the three playoff games Tippie has completed 68.5% of his passes for 1,070 yards (268 per game) with 12 TDs and no interceptions. Wray has also increased his production, averaging 161 total yards per game with 6 playoff TDs.
Wimberley's semifinal opponent, the Carthage Bulldogs, have had sustained recent success, having advanced to at least the semifinals in 11 of the past 13 seasons, winning state championships in seven of those years. The other 4A-II semifinal features Gilmer HS against Graham HS.
