• English I- Pre-AP ​2019 Summer Reading Assignment Future Pre-AP English I Students and Parents,

    We looking forward to working with you next year as we begin your journey into Pre-AP English I. We will begin the school year with the unit ​Personal Journeys ,​ which will feature a series of poems, essays, Pre-AP ​Laying the Foundation ​analysis techniques, and an in-depth study of the novel ​The Secret Life of Bees ​by Sue Monk Kidd ​. W​ hile we will review the Pre-AP concepts of analysis, the first two weeks of school will focus heavily on the summer reading.

    We can answer questions via e-mail throughout the summer, so please do not hesitate to contact us if you need clarification. The assignment will also be posted online and available at the front office. ​Caution: Please do not wait until the last week to begin the assignment. I​ hope you have a great summer!

    Novel: The Secret Life of Bees, ​Sue Monk Kidd ​Follow 14-year old Lily Melissa Owens on her journey as she discovers more about herself and her past. ​Parents: You are encouraged to preview the novel in order to review the content and themes. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us for an alternative reading, preferably prior to the last week of the summer.

    Annotation Journals will be due the first day of class. An in-class essay test is required on the first week of school.

    Reading Assignment: ​Read and annotate the novel. Follow the guidelines for analysis, as your annotations should not be a summary of the entire book. I am often asked by students, ​“How many annotations are required?” ​My answer, ​“I prefer quality over quantity.”

    Directions: ​Purchase a ​college-ruled composition book ​(no spiral notebooks).

    ● ​Part I, Literary Scavenger Hunt ​- Complete the Literary Scavenger Hunt as your read the novel, placing Post-it notes in your book when you find something from the literary list.

    ● ​Part II, Dialectical Journal- ​Use your Literary Scavenger Hunt findings to annotate, making sure you write in your reading journal the page numbers and quote directly from text. (See sample page below.)

    ● Part III: Reflections to Sections ​-After reading each section, respond to the prompt for each section. Reflection entries must be a minimum of 20 lines.

    Academic Honesty Statement ​: I will not use SparkNotes or any other similar resource for any part of this assignment. I will work independently and understand that sharing answers will be considered cheating and result in an automatic zero.

    Part I: Literary Scavenger Hunt- ​Provide an example for each of the following literary terms (you may use a Post-it note or write in your personal copy). These will be used in your annotation journal on part II. Make sure to label the literary term used.

    Part II: Annotation Journal- ​Use your Literary Scavenger Hunt to write your annotation journal. You must use all of the literary terms and may use some more than once. You will need a ​total of 25 annotations.
    Sample Annotations ​: T​ ext- What, When, Who, and Where​... ​& Context Commentary/Extended Commentary- Y​ our observations or insight into the ​author’s purpose and explanation of why it is important. A​void retelling the story, or plot summary.

    Observation: W​ hat does the text say?
    As Pi finds himself alone in ​Quote: p. 155
    nature, Nature herself becomes a character, “It was a placid explosion of orange and red, a great chromatic symphony, a color canvas of supernatural proportions, truly a splendid Pacific sunset, quite wasted on me.”
    beautiful, but dangerous. Pi describes the sky with various metaphors comparing the
    sunset to a painting to compare the cruelty he continues to suffer while on the ocean, as he faces hunger, thirst, and near-death.
    Context: When? Who? Where?

    Why is it important? Include the words ​Pi has been out on the ocean alone for quite some time now and is beginning to doubt his survival.

    “author’s purpose” ​The author’s purpose is to personify the beauty vs. destruction mankind faces to survive. Pi has been on the ocean many weeks and feels he has been abandoned. Man vs. Nature is a theme used throughout this section of the book and must find his strength within himself in the face of adversity.

    Part III--Reflections on sections: (20 lines minimum in your journal)
    Section I: ​What compelled Rosaleen to spit on the three men’s shoes? What does it take for a person to stand up with conviction against brutalizing injustice? What do you like best about Rosaleen?
    Section II: ​Lily grew up without her mother, but in the story, she finds a house full of them. Have you ever had a mother figure in your life who wasn’t your true mother? Have you ever had to leave home to find home?
    Section III: ​Project into the future. Do you think Lily will ever see her father again? Does she become a beekeeper? A writer? What happens to Rosaleen? What happens to Lily and Zach? Who would Zach be today?
