Following eight years as head coach in Iowa Park and Glen Rose,  he returned to Wimberley in 2002 and led the Texans to two State Championships (2005, 2011). Under Coach Nelms the Texans also advanced to the state semifinals in 2010 and the state quarterfinals in 2006 and 2009.  In 2026 Coach Nelms was also inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.
