Superintendent's Message

As we welcome in 2012, we look forward to another successful year and are prepared to meet the challenges it brings.

Wimberley Independent School District is known throughout the state for our academic excellence and successful extra-curricular programs.  This tradition of success is an expectation among our students, parents and community.  This tradition also attracts many families living in surrounding districts who want their children to experience this level of success.  WISD’s open/free transfer policy has allowed these families the opportunity to join us in our endeavors of success.

This year brings new challenges with the implementation of a new state accountability system. The State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) will replace the current TAKS test for grades 3 through 8 while 9th grade students begin taking the End of Course (EOC) exams as part of the new graduation requirements. This is a more rigorous system, structured on college readiness knowledge and skills.  Our administrative team and faculty continue making necessary adjustments to our curriculum to ensure alignment with the new standards. In addition, we are committed to providing our teachers the training necessary to successfully implement instructional strategies to best address the new standards.

As you know, the other challenge facing school districts across the state is the Legislative decision to cut state funding for public education by $4 billion over this next biennium. We implemented a budgetary plan which addresses the $2.4 million WISD will be cut while ensuring the quality of instruction will not be affected and continue guaranteeing every classroom has a quality teacher. As stated in the Wimberley Independent School District Mission we are committed to, “Empowering dreams through educational excellence.”

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we encourage you to become involved in your child’s education. The continued success of Wimberley ISD depends on working together. We welcome you to visit campuses or the district office to see the wonderful things happening and discover how you can be a part of WISD success in 2011-2012 and beyond!

Sincerely,

Dwain York
